In creating Filter Free Yoga, Ally (my co-pilot) and I became very aware of what we wanted to offer - and that was simply, something OTHER. Something different to the endless, body-focussed, stylised, bikini shots out there. We wanted to share the vulnerabilities of yoga. The reality of struggling to find time to do it. The obstacles overcome, alongside the pinnacles reached, the a-ha and heart moments that make it all worthwhile. We wanted to share the bliss of yoga, real everyday, ordinary, amazing, human yoga.
And when someone asked us if we were anti-bikini, or would we put pictures of bikinis up there if the subject of the shot had body issued they'd overcome... honestly, we pondered for a minute.
Just a minute.
Then the answer was clear.
It came down to this: Were we ANTI bikini or were we PRO inclusivity? Were we ANTI modern day acrobatics yoga or were we PRO... yoga?
When we looked at it like that, the answer was simple. The answer was/is that we want to offer another voice to the ones that are currently out there. An inspiring voice, not an intimidating voice. A place for people to feel empowered, connected and excited, rather than not bloody good enough.
YOU, beauty, don’t need more motivation to do a bigger brighter pose. You don’t need to be inspired to action. You don’t need to read any more lists and posts about how you’re not doing enough or how you're not hot enough or how using a block means you're not a real yoga.
Did you know a yogi, in the traditional sense, is someone who is on the path of enlightenment? It's someone who is taking the practices of moving from darkness into light. So in short, today, NO. We won't be showing pictures of people in bikinis on our #filterfree pages - because they're already out there. Just put hashtag yoga into instagram and you'll see quite literally millions of bikini shots there (and butt shots, boob shots, sunset shots etc etc etc). More power to you. But what you probably won't see is what we're trying to shine a light on.
So there you go.
Neither is 'right' or 'wrong', there's space for both and there's space for more. Most importantly, there's space for just being wherever the hell you are. And today, that's here.
With love xo
